Chapter: The summer of the beautiful white horse


1. You will probably agree that this story does not have breathless adventure and exciting action. Then what in your opinion makes it interesting ?

Ans. Yes, I agree , this story does not have breathless adventure and exciting action, yet it has suspense that makes it interesting for the readers. It has a good psychological narration. Being poor both the boys wanted they take the horse back to its owner. to try something adventurous, so they got a horse. After some time, they take horse back to it's owner

2. Did the boys return the hourse because they were conscience stricken or because they were afraid ? 

Ans. The boys returned the horse not because they were afraid but because of their conscience. Their family was known for its honesty. The boys were innocent and they thought taking the horse and riding it is not a kind of stealing. Once they met John Byro, when the horse was with them . Since John knew about their honesty, he did not accuse the boys, he only said, " Yet the horse is the twin of my horse ". This struck the boys and they decided to take the horse back to the farmer's vineyard to put it in the barn. 

3. "One day back there in the good old days when I was nine and the world was full of every imaginable kind of magnificence, and life was still a delightful and mysterious dream ... " The story begins in a mood of nostalgia. Can you narrate some incident from your childhood that might make an interesting story ? 

Ans. By reading these lines , no one can stop themselves from travelling back to the memory lane. I remember when I was 10 years old, used to visit my grandparent's house which is located in Mussoorie. During our summer vacation, my granny would take us to the market to have delicious food, would buy books and enjoy the scenery. My granny is very fond of reading. Once when we were purchasing books, I saw my granny busy talking with one very generous - looking uncle of her age. She called all of us. I was very surprised to know that the person she was talking to, was the famous writer Ruskin Bond. He resides in Mussoorie. We purchased books. He autographed on all our purchases. We clicked one photograph with him. It was a very fine day , that incident encouraged me to read more books . 

4. The story revolves around characters who belong to a tribe in Armenia. Mourad and Aram are members of the Garoghlanian family. Now locate Armenia and Assyria on the atlas and prepare a write - up on the Garoghlanian tribes . You may write about people, their names, traits, geographical and economic features as suggested in the story .

Ans. This entire concept of the existence of this tribe is said to be fictitious. It is said to be formed by William Saroyan in his book. " My name is Aram " ( 1940 ). The Garoghlanian tribe is Armenian. The culture of these people, known for their honesty, is at the heart of the story. Hospitality is also an important function in their culture. The religion of most Armenian families is Christianity. 

5. The story is about which two characters ?

Ans. The story is about two Armenian boys Aram and Mourad who are poor and belong to a tribe that is known for its trust and honesty. 

6. What does the narrator think of Mourad ?

Ans. The narrator thought of Mourad as a fun loving person. He knew Mourad enjoyed life more than anybody else. He ( Aram ) was shocked when Mourad woke him up at four in the morning to give him a horse ride.  

7. What according to Aram, was his first longing ? 

Ans. Aram's first longing was to ride a horse.

8. Who was John Byro ? Why does he visit the author's house ?

Ans. John Byro was a farmer. He was welcomed in the author's house. He visits the author's house to discuss about his missing horse. 

9. What does the narrator tell about the quality of Garoghlanian family ? 

Ans. The narrator tells that the members of Garoghlanian family are known for their honesty. They cannot steal from anyone . They are able to differentiate between right and wrong. They cannot take advantage of anybody.
