Chapter: The Address


1. "Have you come back ?" said the woman . " I thought that no one had come back ". Does this statement give some clue about the story ? If yes what is it ?

Ans. Yes, these words by Mrs. Dorling to the narrator show she was not expecting her visit. She had presumed that all of them were dead. This leads to the conclusion that the story is set against the tragic circumstances of a war in which families lost their lives and belongings. This shows that the narrator's family once lived in that area and secondly Mrs. Dorling was not expecting anyone to claim the belongings. 

2. The story is divided into pre - war and post - war times. What hardships do you think the girl underwent dur these times ? 

Ans. The family of the girl was rich before the war and they had valuable possessions in their house. When the war started, Mrs. Dorling established contact with them and started visiting them frequently She started taking their possessions with her whenever she would visit as she believed if they would leave the place, such things should not be wasted. After the war, the girl suffered a lot. Her mother died and she had to live in a rented house. Her mother had told her about their possessions lying with Mrs. Dorling and the girl wanted her belongings back. But when she met Mrs. Dorling, she saw her cold behaviour. She lost interest in those things. The girl finally decided to leave that house and forget the address forever. 

3. Why did the narrator of the story want to forget the address ? 

Ans. Mrs. Dorling kept the valuable things of the girl ( narrator ) in her house until the war was over as she was a selfish woman. Her mother gave her the address of Mrs. Dorling, " 46, Marconi Street. " She decided to meet her. The girl was afraid to visit the place as it brought back many past memories. When she saw her things arranged in a tasteless manner, she lost interest in them. She could not connect with the things and thought she would destroy the good memories. She had with those things. She decides to forget the address and never go back to that place again. 

4. " The Address " is a story of human predicament that follows war .

Ans. The war always brings a lot of sufferings to human beings. It brings both destruction and death. " The Address " is based on the same theme. During the war, all the belongings of the narrator were taken by Mrs. Dorling who promised to keep them safe. The mother of the protagonist died and all the possessions were left with the acquainstance. Years later, the girl decides to visit the house whose address was given by her mother years ago. The woman showed no sympathy to her nor did she recognize her. She had assumed that her entire family had died. That woman didn't have any emotions because she didn't want to give anything back to the girl. This story suggests that war leaves the world desolated and it cannot be healed.

Ans. The narrator is a very emotional person . She is an intelligent and devoted daughter . She loved and respected her mother but she does not like the idea of Mrs. Dorling. She visited 46, Marconi Street twice to see, touch and remember her mother's belongings. She does not like to remain in the past and move on which her future.
